Young Professionals Leadership Forum: Illuminate Vancouver
The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade hosted the 8th Annual Leadership Forum on May 18th at the Imperial Vancouver. The Company of Young Professionals (CYP) challenged Peer Leadership Forums (PLFs) to create videos addressing Greater Vancouver’s most pressing issues. The films were informative, innovative, and inspiring. The winning video drew attention to the unaffordability of the city resulting from an expensive real estate market. Vancouver’s natural beauty and balanced lifestyle is appealing across generations; however, young talent is starting to leave the city because they simply can’t afford to stay.
The first step to solving these big issues is to raise awareness and start a conversation. This is exactly what happened at the event last night. Young professionals engaged with an impressive panel to discuss real-world solutions. The panel advised that millennials should take their online stance into community meetings.
Some of the BIG ideas raised were to:
- Approach the government and educational institutions
- Give employers incentives to hire new graduates
- Implement student loan deferrals for BC residents
- Push towards mentorships and internships
- Incorporate flex-time for a better work-life balance
The formal part of the evening concluded with the presentation of the 2016 Engaged Leadership Certificates. Tangle’s own Chris Milton, who was among this year’s recipients, was recognized for his work in Strategic Marketing.
“I’ve had the pleasure of working closely with the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade’s staff and other amazing volunteers in the Leaders of Tomorrow Program, CYP and Small Business Council to be a part of furthering the initiatives of these programs.” – Chris Milton
The event was another perfect example of the power of networking. A tight-knit group of bright minds with novel ideas came together to help make a difference. We are excited to see a change in the Greater Vancouver Area.
